Tips for a Successful Photo Shoot

Congratulations on scheduling your upcoming photo shoot! Whether it's a family portrait, engagement session, professional headshot, or any other type of photography session, proper preparation can make a significant difference in the outcome. To ensure you have a memorable and successful experience, we've compiled a list of essential tips for our valued clients.

Before the Photo Shoot

  1. Choose the Right Photographer: Spend time researching photographers and select one whose style and portfolio resonate with you. Communicate your expectations clearly and discuss your vision for the shoot with them.
  2. Book in Advance: Schedule your session well in advance to secure your preferred date and time. This is especially important for outdoor shoots, which may be weather-dependent.
  3. Location Scouting: If you have a specific location in mind, recommend this to your photographer.
  4. Wardrobe Selection: Plan your outfits. Consider the style and theme of the shoot, and coordinate colors and clothing choices among all participants.
  5. Grooming: If necessary, schedule haircuts, makeup appointments, or grooming sessions a few days before the shoot to allow time for any adjustments or changes.
  6. Props and Accessories: If you plan to include props or accessories, make sure you have them ready and in good condition.
  7. Rest and Hydration: Get a good night's sleep before the shoot, and stay hydrated and well-fed to keep your energy throughout the session, especially with children.

Lighting Considerations:

Golden Hour is the best time for amazing photos. This is about 1 hour prior to sunset. Any time during the day when the sun is not directly above or is at least partly cloudy/shaded is the second best time to shoot.

Day of the Photo Shoot

  1. Arrive on Time: Be punctual to make the most of your scheduled time with the photographer. Being late can limit the available light and potentially affect the mood of the shoot.
  2. Relax and Have Fun: Nervousness can show in photos. Trust your photographer's expertise and enjoy the process. Candid, relaxed shots often turn out the best.
  3. Communication: Keep the lines of communication open with your photographer. Share your ideas, preferences, and any concerns you might have.
  4. Weather Considerations: If you're shooting outdoors, be prepared for changes in weather. Bring appropriate clothing or accessories, and have a backup plan if needed.
  5. Cell Phones: Consider turning off or silencing your phone during the shoot to minimize distractions and interruptions.

During the Photo Shoot

  1. Posing: Don't worry if you're not an experienced model. Your photographer will guide you with posing and provide direction to capture your best angles.
  2. Natural Expressions: Aim for genuine, relaxed expressions. Try to forget the camera is there and focus on the moment.
  3. Breaks: If the shoot is long, don't hesitate to ask for short breaks to freshen up, rest, or hydrate.
  4. Children and Pets: If you have children or pets involved, bring someone to help manage them and keep them engaged.

Quick Tips when the camera is up:

  1. Ensure eyes are open and look at the camera so everyone's eyes are open (especially in bigger groups).
  2. Smile naturally
  3. Ensure your faces is visible and not behind someone that may be to the side or in front of you.

After the Photo Shoot

  1. Patience: Understand that post-processing takes much more time than most would think. Your photos will be carefully edited and retouched for the best images possible. While I pride myself in a good turnaround speed, I also ensure my edits are very good which makes the process more thorough, and couple that with multiple shoots that are being edited at once.
  2. Selection: Once you receive your photos, take your time to select your favorite photos for printing or digital use.
  3. Feedback: Provide constructive feedback to your photographer and recommend their services via their social media if you enjoyed the experience. We value your input to improve our work and better serve future clients.
  4. Enjoy the Memories: Cherish the photos and share them with friends and family. They are a beautiful reminder of a special moment in your life. This is an awesome opportunity to share with friends on social media and tag your photographer to thank them while helping their business grow.
